Jay W. Deverich

Mr. Deverich represents public and private developers, builders, landowners, investors, landlords and tenants in all aspects of real estate transactions. He is renowned for his accessibility, personalized touch and creativity in working with clients and counterparties in a variety of sophisticated real estate transactions. At different times and in many different transactions, Mr. Deverich has represented clients sitting at every side of the deal table: buyer and seller, master plan developer and merchant builder, landlord and tenant, lender and borrower, joint venture investor and joint venture developer. And he understands not only the legal issues but also the business aspects of real estate deals which enhances his position on the client team.

During Mr. Deverich's many years of practice, he has handled a wide range of complex real estate matters including acquisition and disposition of large undeveloped tracts of land, low rise and high rise office buildings, residential complexes, industrial buildings and retail centers; commercial, industrial and retail leasing (representing both major landlords and tenants); commercial and industrial property management issues; transactional land use and development aspects of large master planned communities and mixed use projects; representation of master planned community owners in sales to merchant builders and commercial developers; real estate finance; troubled project workouts involving California "one action" rule and antideficiency law counseling, deed in lieu transactions and foreclosures; large construction contracts (representing both owners and contractors); and structuring of partnerships, joint ventures and limited liability companies.

Past Experience

Mr. Deverich began his legal career as an attorney working for the Orange County office of Latham & Watkins, where he practiced in the corporate and real estate departments. In 1989, he left to join the real estate department of Morrison & Foerster's Orange County office, and in 2001, he founded Deverich & Gillman LLP. Before law school, from 1980 to 1983, Mr. Deverich was employed by the international accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co. and worked in the tax department of that firm's Orange County office. He was licensed by the State of California in 1982 as a CPA


Mr. Deverich earned his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley in 1986, where he was elected to the of the Order of the Coif, and graduated in the top 10% of his class. He received a B.S. degree with a double major in Accounting and Finance, cum laude, from Brigham Young University in 1980. He speaks fluent Japanese
